Fan motors in refrigerators and freezers drive the circulation fans that move cold air across the evaporator and distribute it through the compartments. In No Frost systems, they are critical for even temperature, fast cooling recovery after the door is opened, and correct defrost performance.
Common issues include worn bearings/bushings (noise, vibration), a stalled or slow motor (weak airflow and poor cooling), ice blocking the fan, damaged wiring/connectors, or failure of the control board that supplies power to the motor. Typical symptoms are loud humming or grinding, uneven temperatures, the fridge section warming while the freezer stays cold, frost buildup near the evaporator, or error codes on models with diagnostics.
Basic fixes include unplugging the appliance, removing ice and debris, checking that the fan spins freely, and inspecting connectors. If the motor is noisy, seized, or not running when it should, replacement of the fan motor (often as an assembly) is usually the most reliable repair.
