A radiant heater in an electric hob is the heating element used in glass-ceramic cooktops. It heats up and transfers heat through the glass to the cookware. It is typically a spiral or ribbon element mounted under the cooking zone and works by electrical resistance. Heat output is controlled by a power regulator or an electronic module, while temperature limiters and sensors protect against overheating.

Typical faults include: the zone not heating or heating weakly, intermittent heating, slow warm-up, tripping the breaker/RCD, a burning smell, or visible scorching/damage on the heater. Common causes are an open circuit in the coil/ribbon, overheated terminals, damaged wiring, worn connectors, or failure of the control switch or power electronics.

Repairs usually involve checking wiring and terminals, measuring the heater resistance, and replacing the element or the complete heating zone with a compatible part. Always disconnect the hob from the mains before any work.
