In refrigerators, the water tray (drip tray/evaporation tray) is a plastic pan that collects defrost water from the drain tube. The water then evaporates naturally, often helped by the warmth from the compressor and condenser area. The tray is usually located at the bottom of the unit, near the compressor.

Common issues:

  • Water on the floor: cracked tray, tray out of position, drain tube misaligned, or an overfilled tray due to a blocked defrost drain.

  • Bad odors: stagnant water, dirt, or mold in the tray.

  • Excess water inside the fridge/freezer: a clogged drain hole or frozen drain line, causing water to overflow before it reaches the tray.

What to do: unplug the appliance, clean the tray with warm water and mild detergent, and check that the drain tube is seated correctly above the tray. If the drain is blocked, clear the drain hole/channel and thaw any ice in the drain line. Replace the tray if it’s damaged.
